Oct 10, 2020 (newstodate): The closure of Russia's airspace to "unfriendly nations" after the start of Russia's war on Ukraine creates havoc in the aviation industry.
Excepting notably Chinese carriers, many airlines are forced to fly long detours to avoid Russian airspace, rendering operations unprofitable or outright impossible.
Finnair is one airline especially hard hit, relying earlier on the Europe-Asia and China traffic as its main asset that has now been diminished to the point of forcing the carrier to direct instead its main focus on traffic to North America where competition is stiff.
SAS has also cited the closure of the Russian airspace as one main reason for closing down its services to Tokyo, and now Virgin Atlantic has announced the stop of flights to Hong Kong, operated for over 30 years, due to the inconveniences of the longer routes avoiding Russia.
