Jan 20, 2022 (newstodate): In 2021, Latvia's Riga Airport saw cargo volumes rising 20 percent, y-o-y, to 27,300 tonnes.
Documenting a steady recovery after a troubled 2020, results in 2021 were even two percent better than in pre-Covid 2019.
At the same time, the airport has seen a change in the underlying pattern of air cargo flows.
Due to the restrictions including lock-downs in an effort to limit the spread of the pandemic, the volume of cargo carried by passenger aircraft has gone down by about 50 percent, while the volume of cargo carried by freighters and all-cargo operations has increased by 70 percent, compared to 2019.
Contributing to the increase in cargo handled at the airport is the rapid growth of e-commerce due to the pandemic, boosted by the twice-weekly Hong Kong-Riga freighter service established by Venipak and starting from September 18, 2021.
