Jan 20, 2022 (newstodate): Construction works are now in full swing at Oslo Airport that will see the opening of a new seafood cargo terminal in summer 2023.
To be established by a private developer Oslo Airport City, The World Seafood Center will comprise 40,000 m2 terminal space, of which 20,000 m2 are already taken on an 18-years lease contract with an option for further expansion by GPC, Gardermoen Perishables Center owned by Schenker Norway, DHL and the Norwegian freight forwarder Air Cargo Logistics.
As a joint project between OAC and Gardermoen Perishable Center, GPC's logistics center will cover a minimum of 20,000m2 with a terminal designed for a storage capacity around 2,700 metric tonnes of seafood at any given time, equalling 3,600 euro pallets and 130 ready-built air cargo pallets, and with a production capacity targeting around 25 air cargo pallets per hour.
The unloading/loading capacity will be approximately 30 full semi-trailers per hour, and the warehouse will have 40 loading docks to handle euro pallets, and up to six additional bays for air cargo pallets.
With the coming new mega-terminal for handling of seafood exports, Avinor maintains its strategy to focus on Oslo Airport as the country's main gateway for seafood exports, while critics maintain that alternatives in the northern part of the country would be superior, located closer to production sites and thus minimizing the needs for overly long road transportation times as well as being more sustainable.
