Jan 07, 2022 (newstodate): With a 2,400m runway, Akureyri Airport has a role to play in Iceland's airports infrastructure - not only as a domestic airport, but also as an alternative for Keflavik Airport under adverse weather conditions and abnormal situations.
A new and expanded passenger terminal is needed for handling of larger passenger flows, and a second tender - after the first tender attracted only one bid - for adding 1,100 m2 to the existing terminal to reach 2,700 m2 has now been closed.
Winner is the Icelandic construction company Byggingafelagid Hyrna, and construction of the first phase will start by the end of March 2023, with commissioning at the beginning of August 2023.
