In 2021, Loftleidir operated 12 flights to Antarctica, and this month is seeing six operations with Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 aircraft operated by Icelandair crews.
Most of the flights are operated for the travel agency Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions, while others are carrying scientific crews from Punta Arenas in Chile or Cape Town in South Africa and the ALE camp at Union Glacier.
Icelandair has also been performing a series of flights for the Norwegian Polar Institute between Oslo and the Troll research center for exchanges of staff at the research center.
Loftleidir, a subsidiary of the Icelandair Group performed its first antarctic flight mission on November 17, 2015, with a Boeing 757-200 aircraft to Union Glacier.
Until then, operations carrying passengers and cargo between Punta Arensa in Chile and the ALE camp at Union Glacier had been operated with C-130 Hercules and IL-76 aircraft,
