Jan 03, 2022 (newstodate): One business segment of Icelandair Cargo is driven by horse-power, literally speaking..
Export of the unique and special Icelandic horses calls for air transportation, where Icelandair Cargo has been a steady provider over the years.
In 2021, Iceland exported 3,341 Icelandic horses - more than 1,000 over last year's total, marking a 44 percent increase, y-o-y.
The last shipment in 2021 comprising 40 horses were shipped by Icelandair Cargo's Boeing 757-200F on December 23, 2021, from Keflavik Airport to Liege in Belgium for onward distribution to customers in several European countries.
In the Nordic markets, one airport with a special taste for Icelandic horses has been Sweden's Norrkoping Airport that saw operations by Icelandair Cargo developing into a weekly service from 2008 till 2010, and later operating five to six annual flights bringing 60-70 horses per flight into Norrkoping Airport for onward sales in the European markets, benefiting from its BIP status obtained in 2007.
