Jan 31, 2022 (newstodate): It pays to work closely with China, also when it comes to air cargo...
Hungary's Budapest Airport saw its total cargo volumes soaring in 2021, exceeding the dream threshold of 180,000 tons and landing at a total of 183,362 tonnes - an increase by 36.4 percent, y-o-y, and at the same time increasing 35.3 percent compared to pre-Covid 2019 volumes.
The airport attributes the strong performance to the consolidation of the BUD Cargo City as part of its long-standing strategic focus on air cargo as a priority segment.
But another strong factor driving the growth has also been the Hungarian government’s Chinese-Hungarian aerial Silk Road policy, lifting the air cargo traffic between China and Budapest to new levels, contributing to the airport and the government’s ambition to make Hungary a freight transport, logistics and distribution hub of Central Europe.
This has resulted in the Alibaba Group’s decision in 2021 to choose Budapest as its Central and Eastern European air logistics hub, attracting other major cargo players to the Hungarian market.
