Jan 18, 2022 (newstodate): The coronavirus pandemic may have been a true blessing for the world's second-largest cargo aircraft, the An-124 Ruslan.
Insatiable demand for airfreight transportation has put a strain on the world's freighter fleets, and this has played out well for the An-124 Ruslan.
No less than 90 percent of the total revenues of the Ukrainian Antonov company was thus generated by the An-124 operations in 2021, Ukrainian media report.
In service with the Ukrainian carrier are now seven aircraft based at the Gostomel Airport near Kiev, managed by Antonov.
The An-124 took off on its first flight in December 1982, but the Antonov State Enterprise expects that they will be able to keep the An-124-100 aircraft airworthy for another 18-19 years.
