Sep 07, 2021 (newstodate): Ukraine is to reconstruct Vinnytsia Airport in the country's central region.
The airport is the only international airport in Central Ukraine, serving 10 regions in the country, as well as the northern regions of neighboring Moldova.
Serving as a military air force and missile base during the Soviet period and owned by the country's Ministry of Defense, Vinnytsia Airport is today long without scheduled services and with only limited charter traffic.
The Ukrainian state has now allocated a first tranche of financial support to renovate the airport that will need a comprehensive runway reconstruction as well as pertinent infrastructure including navigational and lighting systems.
In September 2010, the British company Shanti showed interest in investing in the airport, planning to open the airport for low-cost traffic, and construction of air cargo facilities, including a terminal and a logistics center at Vinnytsia Airport.
Vinnytsia Airport was to be upgraded to allow for handling of aircraft up to MD-11 and IL-76, and Shanti sought to obtain a contract for management of the airport for 25 years.
This, however, was to no avail..
