Sep 03, 2021 (newstodate): Ukraine International Airlines is planning for taking in two Boeing 777-300ER that will be the largest commercial aircraft registered in the country.
Behind the fleet expansion currently negotiated with a yet-unnamed lessor is the Ukrainian tour operator Compass-Tour that will use the aircraft for long-haul charter flights to destinations including the Dominican Republic, Mexican Cancun and the Maldives, already announced as new leisure destinations from October 2021.
At the same time, UIA may operate the aircraft on own long-haul routes to utilize the excess capacity.
While the Boeing 777-300ER will be new in the fleet, UIA earlier operated the smaller Boeing 777-200ER aircraft on flights from Kiev to New York, Toronto, Delhi, Bangkok and Beijing.
In 2018, the airline's fleet comprised three Boeing 777-200ER, but in March 2020, UIA ferried two Boeing 777-200ER aircraft for storage in Spain, later canceling the contract with the lessor, leaving the airline with only one Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.
On top of this, the last remaining Boeing 777-200ER has been grounded since the end of 2019 due to an engine out of service, leaving the carrier with only two aging Boeing 767-300ER aircraft for long-haul operations.
