Sep 30, 2021 (newstodate): Thule Air Base, Pituffik, has now been designated as an alternative airport for Air Greenland's Transatlantic flights under adverse weather conditions and other abnormal situations.
So far, Air Greenland has only had Narsarssuaq Airport, in the southern part of the country, as an option if unable to land at Kangerlussuaq Airport.
With only one 1,830m runway, operations at Narsarssuaq Airport entails weight limitations on flights, while Pituffik Airport has one 3,047m runway allowing for operations without restriction.
The opening of Pituffik as an alternative airport will thus enhance the regularity of Air Greenland's flights between Denmark and Greenland.
