Sep 28, 2021 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Almaty Airport needs modernization and has now secured part of the financing needed.
The Eurasian Development Bank has obtained the backing of a syndicate of investors including the Eurasian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Finance Corporation, and the German investment corporation DEG.
Together, this has raised some 40 mio USD to financing of the start of modernization of the airport, which however requires a total of 780 mio USD.
The total projects comprise the construction of a new terminal and modernization of the existing airport, elimination of capacity restrictions, development of routes, an increase in the number of flights, and an improvement in the quality of customer service.
In November 2018, Kazakhstan became the first country in the CIS region to achieve certification of its capital airport to ICAO IIIB status for both runways.
By the end of October 2018, Almaty International Airport completed reconstruction of its second 4,500 runway, in addition to new taxiways and airfield and runway lighting systems required to attain the new operational status.
Already in 2011, the airport achieved CAT IIIB status of the other 4,400m runway, allowing for both runways to be operated under adverse weather conditions, alleviating the need for redirecting traffic to alternate airports.
