Sep 15, 2021 (newstodate): Finnair's decision to expand its long-haul flights program with flights from a new base at Stockholm Airport fills a gap in the connectivity at Stockholm Airport - and in the revenue stream of the airline.
At Stockholm Airport, the demise of Norwegian's long haul flights dealt a blow, and even after the pandemic SAS has been reluctant to invest in long haul routes from Stockholm, now offering only flights to Miami and New York, while Thai Airways has still not announced a return of flights to Bangkok.
Finnair's opening of flights to Miami, Bangkok and Phuket were thus welcome news to Stockholm Airport - now further augmented by the announcement of long haul flights to Los Angeles and New York.
For Finnair, the opening of long haul flights from Stockholm Airport also opens a new revenue stream to compensate for the sustained slow growth in its home market, Finland, and the continued restrictions on flights to its key markets in Asia.
