- Sep 02, 2021 (newstodate): Cargo has convincingly demonstrated its importance for Finnair during the Covid-19 period.
-About 50 percent of Finnair's current net sales come from air cargo. Before the pandemic, the proportion was seven percent. Finnair expects cargo to account for a larger share of net sales even after the pandemic, Finnair Group CEO Topi Manner told media in June 2021.
Compensating for the shortfall of belly cargo capacity as passenger traffic declined, Finnair performed its first all-cargo flight on March 28, 2020 - and this line of business remains also after the cautious resumption of long-haul flights.
-Based on latest figures, we are still going strong with our cargo business and operations. The growing volume of passenger flights is increasing capacity for cargo, too, so all in all, we have still been growing volumes compared to last year and month by month, says Emmi Teras, Finnair Cargo Marketing Lead.
-It is true that the number of cargo-only operations is coming down with the ramp up, but that’s a very welcome development for Finnair Cargo and obviously for the whole group.
-Since the beginning of the Covid-19 time, we have now been flying just over 2,500 all-cargo flights until end of August, Ms Teras says.
The carrier performed its first all-cargo flight on March 28, 2020, and carried a total of 26,036 tonnes on all-cargo flights in 2020.
By March 28, 2021, the number of all-cargo flights rounded 1,800 operations.
The proportion of volumes on all-cargo, compared to scheduled flights is however clearly receding - down 27.2 percent, month-on-month, in July 2021.
