Aug 13, 2021 (newstodate): Wizz Air is to close its base at Riga airport, in Latvia, allocating instead the aircraft to Vilnius, in Lithuania.
Wizz Air launched flights at Riga Airport on March 13, 2010, as the second European LCC at Riga after Ryanair that started its operations in Latvia already on October 31, 2004.
While closing the base at Riga, Wizz Air will however continue serving Latvia with flights connecting Riga with 10 destinations in Europe, including Dortmund, Eindhoven, Oslo and Stockholm, as well as several UK flights. But flights on the route from Riga to Keflavik, in Iceland, will move to Vilnius from December 17, 2021.
According to routesonline, Ryanair is #1 at Vilnius Airport with 11,700 seats during the week commencing August 9, followed by Wizz Air offering 6,882 weekly departure seats, while Latvia's airBaltic ranks 3rd with 6,815 seats.
Wizz Air is now to allocate a third Airbus A320, earlier based at Riga Airport, to Vilnius Airport, offering flights on 24 routes to 16 countries.
Wizz Air established its base in Lithuania's Vilnius Airport from April 17, 2011, while the base at Riga Airport was opened on June 19, 2014.
