Aug 23, 2021 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport is slowly bridging the gap in cargo volumes during Covid-19. But has a long way to go...
In July, the airport handled 59 tonnes of cargo, up 12.4 percent, y-o-y, and 15 tones of mail, down 18 percent.
During the first seven months of this year, cargo volumes are thus still 14 percent down on last year, while mail volumes at 138 tonnes are rising 2.5 percent.
Not surprisingly, plans for establishing a scheduled freighter service in the Faroe Islands have been well received.
Behind the project is the country's leading seafood exporter Bakkafrost, and plans are to set up a direct cargo flight between Vagar and the USA with a cargo aircraft suitable for operations at Vagar Airport, either a Boeing 757 or Boeing 767 freighter.
So far, little detail has been provided as to frequency, routing etc.
But given the magnitude of Bakkafrost's operations, it seems to be at long last a plan to be realized, in contrast to several earlier aborted attempts.
