Aug 20, 2021 (newstodate): Plans are moving ahead for construction of a new Mo I Rana Airport to be located in Helgeland, Norway.
They have indeed come a long way since Norway's Ministry of Transport in 2002 came up with the idea of merging three existing small local airports into one new airport capable of handling traffic with Airbus A320/Boeing 737 aircraft.
In 2013, the parliament decided to build the new airport, and a ceremony to mark the start of construction was held in 2017.
Since then, the plans were long stalled for lack of a political decision to secure the financing of the project.
Avinor is to finalize tenders for construction of the airport, with contracts expected to be signed in Q1, 2022, paving the road for construction works, and visions are to open for traffic already in 2024.
The new airport will have a runway of 2,400 m, equipped with ILS CAT I and allegedly designed to become a "state of the art facility."
The airport is expected to replace the existing Mo I Rana Airport Rossvoll and directly affect air service operations at Bronnoy, Mosjoen Kjaerstad and Sandnessjoen Stokka airports.
