Aug 16, 2021 (newstodate): International airlines are now re-routing flights between Europe and Asia to avoid flying through Afghan airspace.
The Afghan Civil Aviation Authority reports that its FIR is now uncontrolled airspace in the possession of military actors. There is thus no airnav service available in the FIR, and the authority urges airlines to circulate the airspace.
Also, Kabul's Hamid Karzai Airport has been closed to civilian traffic for the time being.
In response, major airlines including British Airways, KLM and Singapore Airlines, as well as Finnair, are now bypassing Afghan airspace, which will entail longer flying distances.
