Aug 24, 2021 (newstodate): Today, three Lithuanian airports are jointly managed by the state-owned company, Lithuanian Airports Plc, with the country's 4th international airport at Siauliai living a life of its own.
This may change in the future, as warranted by Marius Skuodis Marius Skuodis, Minister of Transport and Communications, on his visit to Siauliai Airport last week.
-Siauliai has a special strategic object - an airport with the longest runway in the Baltic States. Wider operation of this airport, as well as modernization of its infrastructure will further increase the region's investment attractiveness, at the same time open new opportunities for further expansion and development of industrial areas, exploiting integrated air, road and rail transport solutions, the minister said.
Lithuania is currently working on a long-term Lithuanian air transport development and development strategy, Aviation Development Guidelines until 2030, and expectations are now that Siauliai Airport will be included alongside the state-owned airports, managed by Lithuanian Airports, at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.
A former Soviet air base, Siauliai Airport operates a 3,500m CAT 1 runway and a second 3,280m runway, and is a military/commercial airport owned jointly by Lithuania's Ministry of Defense and Siauliai Municipality.
The airport is also growing its importance in the aircraft maintenance segment, with the aircraft maintenance company Aviatic MRO planning for a future with aircraft P2F conversions.
In September 2020, Aviatic landed an MoU with Israel's leading aerospace and MRO company, Israel Aerospace Industrie that will provide Aviatic with necessary licensing and know-how needed to carry out the conversion of B737NG passenger aircraft into cargo configuration.
Aviatic MRO is currently constructing a 23,000 sq m aircraft maintenance and repair center at Siauliai International Airport, scheduled to start operations in 2022.
