Aug 23, 2021 (newstodate): Currently Greenland's only Transatlantic airport, Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport will have a future even after the completion by end of 2023 of two new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat.
In September 2019, an agreement was inked between the governments of Denmark and Greenland to the effect that Kangerlussuaq Airport will remain in service, with the Danish Ministry of Defense to fund the operation.
To secure the future of Kangerlussuaq Airport in the longer term will require massive maintenance and reconstruction works on the airport's 2,500m runway that is impacted by changes in the permafrost conditions causing cracks in the runway surface.
Expectations are now that the runway reconstruction will start immediately after the opening of the new Transatlantic airports in 2023, and a contract has been signed with a consulting company, probably COWI, to work out a program for the works that will be managed by the Greenland government.
Besides, Kangerlussuaq Airport may receive direct US investments, reflecting its importance for US military positioning in the Arctic region that is gaining importance as more maritime lanes are opening while the region's strategic position is attracting increased attention from many sides.
