Aug 12, 2021 (newstodate): Plans for establishing a scheduled freighter service in the Faroe Islands to lift seafood exports to the US market are advancing.
-We are working hard on solutions for all parameters in this complex project, but so far no details are settled, says Birgir Nielsen, CEO of the yet-unnamed airline, and member of the Board that counts Bakkafrost CEO Regin Jabobsen as Chairman, together with Hedin Krett, Andrew Djurhuus, and Hans Meinhard á Hogaboli.
-Issues including aircraft types, ownership or lease of aircraft as well as whether to operate on own AOC or with a partner, are thus still open.
-However, with Bakkafrost's need for a steady flow of seafood exports to the USA, more than one weekly rotation is needed, indicating rather three or even more flights, as well as a routing with at least one additional en-route point on return flights from the USA to the Faroe Islands.
-One such destination on the return flight might indeed be a Danish airport, but this is also up in the air for the time being, says Mr Nielsen.
One industrial portal quotes Bakkafrost's CEO Regin Jacobsen as mentioning Glasgow, in Scotland, as an option for a destination on the flight back to the Faroe Islands, enabling the carrier to obtain a balanced operation.
Today, the bulk of imports to supply shops and retailers of commodities in the Faroe Islands are sourced in Denmark and transported by sea or, for the minor part, flown as belly cargo into Vagar Airport by Atlantic Airways and SAS.
