Jul 28, 2021 (newstodate): News of plans for establishing a scheduled freighter service in the Faroe Islands took the country's airfreight market by surprise- but has met a positive response.
-We didn't know anything about this before news broke in the media, says Knut Lutzen, CEO and owner of Safari Transport, a freight forwarding company established in 1995.
-Compared to similar plans and projects over the last decades, this project at least builds on a strong commitment from the outset, which distinguishes it from earlier attempts. Bakkafrost has a huge need for uplift capacity to bring seafood exports to the US and Far Eastern markets, as well as the financial power to boost the project.
-A dedicated freighter service would become a game-changer in the supply chains serving the Faroe Islands' businesses, not least on the import side where only limited belly cargo is available on passenger flights by Atlantic Airways and SAS, while maritime transport still remains the key provider of capacity to and from Denmark and the UK.
-The project is still little known in the market, and while potentials are big, for us the eventual importance of the freighter would still depend on a range of issues including destinations, frequencies, and rates.
-Anyhow, this is indeed a promising project, and we hope, and expect, to be informed and involved as potential customers and stakeholders in the logistics serving this country, says Mr Lutzen.
