Jun 30, 2021 (newstodate): Still modest in scale of cargo operations and volumes, Estonia's Tallinn Airport sees a future as a cargo hub in the region.
-E-commerce is the key driver in the cargo business, with huge potentials in the Asia/Europe traffic. And we are rather well-positioned to play a role in this, says Riivo Tuvike, Tallinn Airport CEO.
-We offer convenient access to the markets of St Petersburg in Russia, Latvia, Ukraine, Sweden and Finland. And after completion by 2024 of the ongoing and planned infrastructure projects at Tallinn Airport, we will be marketing ourselves as a profitable and sustainable air logistics solution to carriers.
-The counter-argument might be our closeness to Finland's Helsinki Airport, that is indeed a strong competitor. But Helsinki Airport is dominated by Finnair enjoying privileged benefits - and other airlines may not exactly feel welcome at Helsinki Airport, which could provide us with an edge.
-Also, hi-frequency ferries plod the waters between Finland and Estonia in only 90 minutes, so distance is really no issue. And we are in talks with some airlines for new traffic to serve these markets.
-As for future business opportunities, we have had some talks already with exporters of Norwegian salmon who require an ever-growing capacity to lift seafood to Asia. Even if capacity is increasing at the Oslo and Helsinki hubs, there may still be needs and room for a new hub - and I hope Tallinn will be an option, says Mr Tuvike.
