Jun 29, 2021 (newstodate): Cargo volumes in 2021 at Estonia's Tallinn Airport are still modest - but showing sound month-by-month increases, boding well for sustained development.
-Actually, the capacity of our existing cargo facilities is almost exhausted, restraining opportunities for growth, says Riivo Tuvike, Tallinn Airport CEO.
-In the plans for Tallinn Airport is a new cargo city that is still in the construction phase with much work going on, while a crucial part of the plans, construction of a new apron to serve both the cargo operators and the MRO companies, is to be finalized by the end of 2021. Also, the runway has been extended to 3,480m, making it the longest in the Baltic region.
-Two cargo terminals are operating at the airport, both rather limited in size. With the completion of the plans for a new cargo city, the total cargo handling capacity will increase by 100 percent compared to today's situation.
-In total, we will have some 80,000 m2 dedicated to cargo as well as to MRO where Magnetic MRO is our single largest company with big plans for future expansion at Tallinn Airport.
-With this new infrastructure in place, we see promising prospects for sustained growth in the cargo industry - but not until 2023, says Mr Tuvike.
During the first five months of this year, the airport has been handling a total of 3,856 tonnes of cargo, which is 1.2 percent up on last year.
Excepting the first two months of 2021, volumes are rising by three percent, y-o-y, in March; by 10.4 percent in April, and by 27.6 percent, y-o-y, in May 2021, to 830 tonnes.
