Jun 29, 2021 (newstodate): With its first flight on June 28, 2021, Norwegian is back in the Finnish market.
On the route map of Norwegian are now direct flights from Helsinki Airport to Oslo, Stockholm, Oulu, Malaga and Alicante, with more to come as the market warrants, travel restrictions ease, and the airline's fleet grows from the current 12 Boeing 737-800 to more than 50 within a year.
The re-entry in Finland also signals a coming future opening of a base at Helsinki Airport, with re-employment of Finnish cockpit and cabin crews, as reported by Finnish media.
At its heyday until 2019/2020, Norwegian had grown to become the second-largest airline operating at Helsinki Airport, aggregating some 15 percent of the total traffic, and trailing only after Finnair accounting for some 65 percent.
And in the original pre-coronavirus summer schedule, Norwegian planned for direct non-stop flights from Helsinki to 21 international destinations, as well as flights on a domestic route network in Finland.
Norwegian first opened its base at Helsinki in March 2011 with three aircraft serving a network comprising 13 international and two domestic routes.
