Jun 24, 2021 (newstodate): The noose is tightening around the Belarus carrier Belavia.
After the forced detour of a Ryanair aircraft on an intra-EU flight from Athens to Vilnius on May 23, 2021, the international response has been a range of economic and political sanctions of Belarus and its airline.
Lately, seven non-EU countries have now sided with EU members' decision to ban Belarusian airplanes from their airspace.
-The Candidate Countries the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, have thus aligned themselves with the EU Council Decision on banning Belavia from entering EU airspace, the EU Council press service says in a release.
The flight ban comprises all airlines registered in Belarus.
Belavia's fleet consists of 28 aircraft including nine Boeing 737-800, four Boeing 737-500, four Boeing 737-300, four Embraer-175, and seven Embraer-195 aircraft, in 2020 serving a route network connecting 56 airports in 30 countries in Europe and Asia.
In 2018, Belavia signed a contract with the Danish regional aircraft leasing company NAC for delivery of a total of five Embraer aircraft including three E195 and two E175, all within NAC’s existing Embraer order book, and with the fifth and last aircraft delivered in April 2020.
