Jun 07, 2021 (newstodate): By the turn of this month, Norwegian salmon producers will start harvesting significant volumes of large salmon, calling for increased air cargo uplift capacity.
-We also hear that the ongoing runway works at Evenes Airport may be completed ahead of schedule, till now slated for July 14, 2021, allowing for operations with large and fully loaded aircraft like Qatar Airways' Boeing 777-300 to return after suspension since April 22, 2021, says Stig Winther, Perishable Center Nord CEO.
-If this may induce Qatar Airways Cargo to actually reinstate their twice-weekly services at Evenes Airport after relocation to Bodo Airport is not know today - but at least both Evenes and Bodo have proved that sustainable handling of freighter services to lift seafood exports to the world is indeed a realistic alternative to a strict focus on Oslo Airport as the sole gateway.
-At Evenes, we are looking into prospects of handling some 20-30,000 tonnes of seafood exports, and this will indeed require numerous freighter operations, as well as continued development of our terminal handling infrastructure, which is also now in the plans.
-Together with Bodo Airport, we share a common strategy for developing the air cargo infrastructure in Northern Norway and support each other all along the way with a long-term perspective - even if we are also competitors, says Mr Winther.
During the runway construction period at Evenes Airport, the sole operator of cargo flights is Virgin Atlantic Airways.
In cooperation with Kuehne & Nagel Norway, Virgin Atlantic on February 3, 2021, launched two weekly flights from Evenes to London Heathrow using Boeing 787-9 aircraft to lift seafood belly cargo into Virgin's route network in London, with onward transfer to the US market.
