Jun 07, 2021 (newstodate): The three Baltic markets may soon get connected to destinations in the USA - indirectly, at least..
According to Routes Online, Delta Air Lines and airBaltic are seeking DOT approval of a planned code-share agreement initially comprising flights on 24 routes served by airBaltic.
16 of the code-shared routes will depart from Riga Airport, another five from Tallinn, and the remaining three from Vilnius.
In all cases, flights will connect to Delta's European hubs at Amsterdam, Munich and Paris, while the proposed agreement will also apply to airBaltic's routes from Riga to Copenhagen, Barcelona and Madrid.
The Baltic markets were last connected to the USA by airBaltic's earlier code-share agreement with Uzbekistan Airways.
Uzbekistan Airways used Riga Airport as a transit hub on its flights between Tashkent and New York from October 31, 2004, operating Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on two weekly rotations, and since October 23, 2004, airBaltic and Uzbekistan Airways cooperated under a code-share agreement covering the flights between Tashkent and Riga.
From May 2015, the agreement was expanded to comprise also the flights by the Uzbek carrier between Riga and New York - but the cooperation stopped in March 2018 as Uzbekistan Airways introduced its Boeing 787 aircraft without needs for the intermediate stop at Riga Airport.
