May 20, 2021 (newstodate): Ukraine's Kiev Zhulyany Airport is preparing for a comprehensive reconstruction of its runway infrastructure, causing a full stop to operations in 2023.
Plans for the reconstruction falls into two stages, with the design work to be performed in 2021.
The reconstruction of taxiways will take place in 2022 without interfering with daily flight operations as the works will be performed alternating between the current infrastructure options.
In 2023, the airport’s operations will however be suspended for eight to nine months as the runway will be totally dismantled, with new asphalt coverage to replace the current asphalt concrete.
The coming new runway will add almost 500 m to the existing 2,310 m, allowing for handling of aircraft including Airbus A320 Family aircraft as operated by the airport's main airline, Wizz Air.
