May 19, 2021 (newstodate): Recovering at a fast pace after bleak prospects in 2020, Latvia's Riga Airport saw its cargo volumes doubling in April 2021.
Increasing by 101 percent, y-o-y, the airport handled a total of 2,155 tonnes of cargo in April, including 1,475 tonnes of cargo and 680 tonnes of mail.
In January-April, volumes are up by 17.5 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 7,862 tonnes.
Cargo in passenger aircraft belly holds thus dropped by 43 percent, y-o-y, to a mere 1,754 tonnes in the first four months of this year.
While passenger flights are still limited, albeit growing after the Covid-19 lockdowns, the development in cargo is thus driven by all-cargo and freighter business.
In April 2021, the number of cargo flights thus increased by 25 percent to 217 movements, while the volume of dedicated cargo increased by 52 percent to 1,606 flights, compared to April 2020.
In January to April 2021, the airport achieved an increase in cargo flights by 38 percent to 879 movements, and the volume of dedicated cargo increased by 68 percent to 6,108 tonnes.
