May 27, 2021 (newstodate): For April 2021, Latvia's Riga Airport has reported a strong recovery in total cargo volumes, compared to 2020: 2,155 tonnes, up 102 percent, y-o-y.
Seen against the pre-Covid 2019, the steep increase this year was however only 1.7 percent, still documenting that the airport is on the road to recovery from the immediate corona-crisis.
Of the total cargo volumes handled at Riga Airport in April 2021, 680 tonnes were mail shipments; 800 tonnes consisted of e-commerce cargo from China, and 675 tonnes were cargo on regular passenger and charter airlines.
In April 2021, the number of freighter and all-cargo flights increased by 25 percent to 217 flights, generating an increase by 52 percent in the volume of cargo carried by cargo aircraft, totaling 1,606 tonnes.
Cargo on passenger aircraft is still at a low as passenger air traffic is only slowly picking up. Belly cargo handled at Riga Airport was thus only 549 tonnes in April 2021, compared to a meager 10 tonnes in 2020.
In January-April 2021, Riga Airport handled a total of 7,862 tonnes, up 18 percent compared to 2020 - but still down by 9.2 percent compared to pre-corona 2019.
