May 28, 2021 (newstodate): As passenger traffic still remains slow in picking up, the importance and volume of all-cargo and freighter flights handled at Latvia's Riga Airport is rising.
Between January and April 2021, the number of cargo flights at the Airport thus increased by 38 percent, y-o-y, to 879 flights, with the volume of cargo transported on these flights increasing by 68 percent, to 6,108 tonnes.
Riga Airport is especially strong in serving e-commerce cargo flights from the China, with freighter flights from Hangzhou to Riga operated by Atran Airlines' Boeing 737-800BCF aircraft providing up to 23 tonnes of cargo capacity for e-commerce shipments of Cainiao Network, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group.
Also, cargo flights to Riga from Hong Kong are provided by Rossya Airlines.
In addition, Riga Airport is seeing an increase in integrator services to Riga provided by three companies UPS, DHL and FedEx.
UPS flights are today provided by Sprint Air services but from May 31, 2021, services will be provided by Swiftair; DHL uses European Air Transport Leipzig, while FedEx' flight services are provided by ASL Airlines Belgium.
