May 31, 2021 (newstodate): Otherwise among the fastest expanding airlines in Europe, the Hungarian LCC Wizz Air has hit the harsh realities of Norwegian domestic air services.
With competitors Norwegian soon back in business and with a new carrier Flyr preparing for launch of services, Wizz Air has pulled back from its ambitious plans for domestic services in the country.
The carrier has stopped all booking on its domestic flights in Norway from June 13, 2021, also closing its base at Oslo Airport from the same date.
From November 2020, Wizz Air launched flights on a domestic route network in Norway comprising 12 destinations, and plans were also to offer flights to five international destinations from Oslo including Alicante, Gran Canaria, Larnaca, Chania and Split, all to be served 2-3 times weekly.
Wizz Air would have been operating flights to 17 destinations, close to overtaking the Norwegian carrier Wideroe that has set up flights to 19 destinations from Oslo Airport in summer 2021.
Wizz Air first entered the Norwegian market - the carrier's 18th - from September 19, 2006.
