May 06, 2021 (newstodate): Undeterred by the current slowdown in cargo volumes, Copenhagen Airport is determined to continue on its strategy to build a cargo village in the Eastern part of the airport premises.
More than 125,000 m2 of land has been dedicated to the development of airfreight-related business, and DHL recently received the building permit for a new 26,000 m2 Northern Europe Hub.
Construction works have already commenced, and the new hub is expected to launch operations by Q4, 2022.
In parallel to this, WFS has started the design of a new terminal 3, to be integrated with the existing Terminal 2 – a warehouse of approx. 3,700 m2, which increases the number of truck gates by 20 percent, providing a clear improvement of flow, and a centralized handling facility for both import and export traffic.
WFS has set the deadline for finalization of the project to Q3, 2022.
Temporary parking facilities for trucks have been established in the area on Parking Lot P17, where expectations of future needs will give important indications for Copenhagen Airport. Initially, this facility is limited to use by truck trailers without load only.
-In cooperation with a developer, Copenhagen Airport has now started the hunt for an operator on the last vacant piece of land with direct access to the apron and the cargo facilities airside, says Jon Larsen, CPH Business Development Manager.
-Plans for development of the Airport Business Park at the opposite side of Kystvejen are also progressing, and Copenhagen Airport hopes to be able to reveal the name of one of the first future operators in the area in the very near future, says M Larsen.
In 2020, Copenhagen Airport was down 35.3 percent in total cargo volumes, to 223,343 tonnes, however retaining its position as the largest cargo airport in Scandinavia.
In Q1, 2021, Copenhagen Airport still saw its total cargo volumes down by 12.5 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 62,498 tonnes in January-March 2021, loads on legacy and integrators carriers combined.
Counting loads on legacy carriers only, the airport handled 41,966 tonnes of cargo in Q1/2021 - a decline by 21 percent.
However, integrators DHL and FedEx continued to play a key role in the overall cargo performance of Copenhagen Airport in Q1, 2021.
Together, the two companies handled 20,533 tonnes of cargo at the airport, an increase by 15.2 percent, y-o-y.
