May 26, 2021 (newstodate): The decision by a growing number of EU airlines to bypass Belarus airspace will have a direct impact on the state's airnav and overflight revenues collected by Eurocontrol on the state's behalf.
According to Eurocontrol figures, some 400 flights will normally be traveling through Belarus airspace, of which some 300 are overflights only.
Belarus charges 245 euro for a passage by an Airbus A320 and up to 770 euro for an Airbus A380, and in 2019 Eurocontrol ivoiced 85 million euro in airnav charges on behalf of Belarus.
Airlines including SAS, airBaltic, Ukraine International Airlines, LOT, Singapore Airlines, Air France/KLM and Lufthansa are now avoiding using Belarus airspace, routing flights between Asia and Europe as well as between north and southeast Europe through Baltic airspace, accepting the penalty of longer flying time and fuel consumption.
Belarus will also be hurt by a shortfall of revenues from its national carrier Belavia that has now been banned access to EU markets by a growing number of countries, pending a EU-wide decision on total exclusion from entry into the joint airspace.
