Apr 23, 2021 (newstodate): April 22 was a day of jubilation at Norway's Bodo Airport as Qatar Airways' first Boeing 777F flight lifted off on the route to Doha with 60 tonnes of seafood shipments.
The two weekly cargo flights have been moved to Bodo Airport from Evenes where refurbishment works till July 14, 2021, cause a shortening of the runway by 700 m.
The event marked the culmination so far of four years of intense work by Bodøregionens Utviklingsselskap to launch all-cargo operations to lift seafood directly to Asia out of northern Norway, in a close cooperation with stakeholders in the regional seafood industries.
-We are now doing our utmost to make Qatar Airways' operations at Bodo Airport a success, proving our capability to handling of large shipments of seafood. There is a strong need for uplift from Northern Norway where huge volumes of seafood call for air logistics and direct flights out of the region to the Asian markets, says Elnar Remi Holmen, Bodøregionens Utviklingsselskap Mng Dir.
-Looking ahead, we hope to see scheduled freighter services out of both Evenes and Bodo, and we are determined to prove that we are an efficient provider of services, says Mr Holmen.
Handling the seafood cargo at Bodo Airport is Widerøe Ground Handling that has played a crucial role in developing the project from the start by building the infrastructure and providing the GSE required for the operation.
