Apr 12, 2021 (newstodate): Boeing is experiencing new production problems with the Boeing 737 MAX series aircraft, seeing several airlines grounding their fleets temporarily.
As the only Nordic airline currently operating the aircraft type, Icelandair confirms that it is not affected by the finding of inadequate grounding of a backup electrical power control unit supporting a rack on the flight deck on certain aircraft.
With the first reentry into commercial service of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on March 8, 2021, the carrier is now operating two aircraft of the type.
Icelandair started operating its first three Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in 2018, and delivery of six more was planned for 2019; seven Boeing 737 MAX aircraft would be added in 2020 and 2021, bringing the fleet to a total of 16 of this type.
In the meantime, Icelandair has however renegotiated its contract with Boeing, and the carrier's fleet will eventually comprise only 12 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
Now, three additional aircraft will be delivered in Spring 2021, with three more to come in 2022.
