Apr 29, 2021 (newstodate): In October 2021, the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will establish a new base in Riga Airport.
For a start, the LCC will allocate two Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Riga Airport, opening 95 weekly flights to a total of 30 destinations including 16 new routes to Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and UK.
Among the spree of coming new routes from Riga are three weekly flights to Aarhus in Denmark, three to Gothenburg in Sweden, and four weekly flights to Torp Sandefjord in Norway.
Ryanair first launched business at Riga Airport on October 31, 2004, with flights to London, Tampere and Frankfurt.
In the autumn 2011, a rift developed between Ryanair and Riga Airport over airport charges, with Ryanair threatening to scale down by 30 percent in a protest against the introduction of security charges - but the problems were overcome, and in 2015 Ryanair - the second-largest carrier at Riga Airport - signed a new contract with Riga Airport, securing the continued traffic by the Irish LCC on routes to and from Riga.
With Riga as a new hub, Ryanair is heating up competition with Latvia's airBaltic - while enhancing the connectivity of the airport.
