Apr 16, 2021 (newstodate): Uncertainty reigns over the future of Cabo Verde's national carrier TACV operating in a venture between the government and majority-shareholder Loftleidir Cabo Verde.
On April 15, 2021, one of three Boeing 757-200 leased from Loftleidir finally returned to Cabo Verde's Praia Airport after a 10-months hiatus in Miami, USA.
A second Boeing 757-200 is still parked in Miami, while the third aircraft has long been parked in Iceland - and according to Cargo Verde media there is growing uncertainty over the future of the fleet and the airline project.
All flights in Cabo Verde have been suspended since April 19, 2020.
In only a few days, Carbo Verde will elect a new government, and the outcome of the election will probably decide on the future of TACV and the cooperation with its Icelandic partner, media say.
In 2017, Loftleidir Icelandic, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines and the Government of Cabo Verde inked a management agreement on the restructuring of the loss-making TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, and in March 2019, Loftleidir Cabo Verde, owned 70 percent by Loftleidir Icelandic ehf, and 30 percent by Icelandic investors, acquired 51 percent of Cabo Verde Airlines.
Plans for Loftleidir Cabo Verde to take over the next tranche of 39 of the 49 percent still held by the Cabo Verde state were aborted in April 2020 due to the uncertainties around the airline's future in the current coronavirus situation.
