Apr 22, 2021 (newstodate): Riga Airport will confirm its leading position in the Baltic air cargo industry with construction of a new Baltic Cargo Hub.
airBaltic has now emerged as the winner of a tender opened in November 2020 for the area dedicated by Riga Airport to the construction of an air cargo service and logistics center, and the opportunity to acquire building rights for 30 years to a plot of land in an area of 1.5 hectares in the northern part of the Airport territory as part of the RIX Cargo City.
With 6,000 m2 floor space, the new cargo terminal will be the largest dedicated air cargo handling facility in the Baltics, designed for handling of up to 30,000 tonnes of cargo annually, and to be operated by airBaltic's cargo handling subsidiary, Baltic Cargo Center.
The new cargo terminal will be located next to the airport’s new dedicated cargo handling apron that launched operations by October 2020.
Construction works will commence by late 2022 and are slated to be completed by early 2024.
The project will be financed through banks and operated by Baltijas Kravu Centrs SIA – cargo handling subsidiary of airBaltic.
Adding to the airport's development in cargo, DHL will start operating a new regional parcel handling complex in the area in 2021.
Riga Airport is currently served by seven cargo airlines including Atlas Air, Atran Airlines, Eleron and RAF Avia, as well as integrators Fedex, UPS and DHL.
