Mar 09, 2021 (newstodate): Since December 14, 2020, Qatar Airways has been operating all-cargo flights from Evenes in northern Norway to Doha lifting seafood exports to Asia.
From the start, the schedule comprised three weekly flights on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the Sunday flight was suspended already by the start of this year.
-The Monday flight will not return, says Stig Winther, Perishable Center Nord CEO.
-It proved too difficult to source the seafood shipments as production and palletizing of the shipments were not in place during the weekend. So volumes were insufficient to warrant the flight.
-Anyhow, a new world record was set by Qatar Airways on February 8, 2021, by lifting no less than 68,944 kg fresh salmon on its Boeing 777-300 aircraft from Evenes Airport via Doha to Asian destinations.
Together, Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic now generate some 200-230 tonnes of seafood uplift per week from Evenes Airport at Narvik.
