Mar 24, 2021 (newstodate): -Absolutely positive! The new approach to the future air cargo infrastructure at Oslo Airport as presented by Avinor bodes well for development and has a much more unified focus than ever before!
At the online meeting of the association of Norwegian Freight Forwarders on March 22, Avinor presented its vision and plans for optimizing use of the scarce space available at the airport, building on stakeholders' responses to a recent RFI.
-We are very positive to the proposed utilization of the areas at disposal for a renewal and expansion of the air cargo infrastructure. Space is indeed limited, and we must wait to see what can actually be realized, says Torgil Staalberg, GPC Mng Dir.
-The opening for development of the area will comprise demolishing of existing terminals, including GPC, to create room for new, more functional facilities. And replacing existing buildings with new, purpose-built facilities will prove more cost-effective than continuing to upgrade and expand existing facilities that were never optimal for their current purpose and growing workloads.
-The overwhelming response from respondents to the RFI pointed to the need for a neutral Cool Hotel to secure the sustained cooling of processed seafood pallets. This would be the first step in a new infrastructure at Oslo Airport providing a neutral service to all stakeholders.
-The next step would be the construction of new terminals. And we consider it a positive trait that Avinor will not be engaged in investments, constraining itself to the role as a facilitator. The projects will thus be market-driven, rather than having Avinor to manage and control the process as was the case with the former, now aborted, plan for a large Avinor Seafood Terminal.
-Other synergies may include a joint solution to security, which is today a heavy cost on operations by all terminals. And there may be other issues where the four terminals at Oslo can cooperate; we are competitors, but still much work is based on cooperation.
-Already in 2016, GPC filed an application with Avinor for space for a new terminal. This remains undecided since then - but hopes are now that participation in the coming tender may finally pave the way for a solution, says Mr Staalberg.
