Mar 04, 2021 (newstodate): A volcanic eruption is hardly what Iceland's Keflavik Airport would hope for in times when traffic is already at rock-bottom low due to the Covid-19.
Anyway, strong tremors over the last few days indicate that the Keilir volcano located only 20 km from the airport may be facing an imminent eruption.
In 2011, air traffic was long hampered by volcanic ashes in the higher levels of the atmosphere from the outbreak of the Eyjafjallajokull, and while less ashes is expected from an outbreak of the Keilir volcano, it is much closer to the airport.
Besides threatening the air traffic at and anywhere near Keflavik Airport, a temporary closure of the airport would have a strong impact on the international air traffic where Keflavik Airport plays an important role for ETOPS flight operations over the North Atlantic lanes.
