Mar 17, 2021 (newstodate): Reflecting a small market under heavy pressure from the Covid-19 and the stop to air traffic, the Faroe Islands' carrier Atlantic Airways is fighting like everyone else to keep propellers turning.
-For quite some time now, our only route served connects the Faroe Islands and Denmark with five weekly rotations, says Johanna A Berghi, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-But rather than grounding part of our fleet comprising two Airbus A320neo and one Airbus A320 aircraft, we keep them in the air alternating on the route to Copenhagen, which keeps maintenance programs going and crews in operational service.
-The fourth fixed-wing aircraft in the fleet, our last remaining Airbus A319, will enter service on a lease contract with the Spanish airline One Airways from June 2021, becoming this airline's first aircraft.
-As for staff, we completed a drastic reduction in work force already in May 2020 and are now operating with only the basic organization as required by regulations and the minimal network served.
-Based on these conditions, we are able to continue operations as budgeted through this year; but hopes are of course that the roll-out of the vaccination programs in Europe will open the skies for a resumption of normal operations again soon. The summer season is absolutely crucial to our company, so if the process draws out challenges will grow as well..
-Having said that, we remain cautiously optimistic, says Ms a Berghi.
