Feb 24, 2021 (newstodate): The projected new seafood logistics service at Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport aims at offering new and comprehensive opportunities for Norway's seafood exporters in the northernmost regions.
Lead partners behind the project are Norrland Spedition & Transportation and Swedavia, with Estonia's XFly acting in a consulting role as to the coming flight operations.
Speaking to newstodate, the project confirms sound progress in negotiations with airlines to provide the uplift capacity of fresh seafood to the Asian and North American markets, with launch of services so far slated for the second quarter 2021, with all preparations to be completed before the end of Q1, 2021.
For Norway's seafood exporters, the asset of Luleaa Kallax Airport is its location only 8-12 hours trucking time from seafood producing sites in northern Norway, while the airport's runway was extended to 3,350 meters in 1999.
Over the last two decades, several attempts have been made to set up a dedicated freighter service at Luleaa Kallax Airport, with operators including Cathay Pacific Cargo, Korean Air Cargo, Atlas Air and others - but so far none have succeeded, in most cases also due to the imbalance in the traffic.
In 2020, Luleaa Kallax Airport handled only 267 tonnes of cargo and 644 tonnes of mail.
