Feb 10, 2021 (newstodate): According to Riga Airport, the total volume of cargo handled at the airport dropped 14.8 percent, y-o-y, in 2020.
In total, 23,218 tonnes of cargo was handled, including 16,342 tonnes on all-cargo flights and 6,876 tonnes in passenger aircraft belly holds.
In effect, the volumes carried on all-cargo flights increased heftily by 40 percent, y-o-y, while the lockdown of most markets caused passenger flights to almost disappear, seeing belly hold cargo down by 56 percent, compared to the preceding year.
The toll on belly cargo was especially hard on mail volumes, earlier a strong element in the airport's cargo traffic constituting 65 percent of the total cargo volumes in 2019, but down to 35 percent in 2020.
Riga Airport saw an over-all drop in volumes of flight movements by 59.1 percent, y-o-y, in 2020, to 35,592 - but the number of cargo flights actually increased by 49 percent to 2,620.
