Feb 10, 2021 (newstodate): We welcome the all-cargo operations at Evenes, now also including Virgin Atlantic, but this is still not attractive for us, says Bjorn Ronald Olsen, Cape Fish CEO.
-Trucking times to Evenes make this option unattractive for us, and we remain well served with trucking shipments to Helsinki for uplift by Finnair directly to Asian and US destinations. Also, Finnair's rates are very competitive.
-Likewise, plans for establishing freighter flights from Bodo Airport will not be a temptation for us due to trucking times that really offer no benefits over the existing and well-functioning services to Helsinki Airport.
-By contrast, renewed efforts to set up freighter services at the Swedish Luleaa Kallax Airport may be of interest for shipments of crabs. This service will primarily be aiming at the salmon exports, but will leave space also for export of crabs, so we will definitely follow these developments closely.
-Uplift capacity is really a challenge for us these days as most passenger air traffic has come to a low. We are thus seeing growing volumes of frozen crabs going by sea while shipments of live crabs still depend on air cargo services, says Mr Olsen.
This year will see the quota for king crabs up by 20 percent, y-o-y, to some 2,000 tonnes, and the quota for snow crabs will go up from last year's 4,000 to 6,500 tonnes in 2021, boding well for Norwegian exporters.
