Feb 05, 2021 (newstodate): Sniffing potentially new air with Joe Biden as new US president, Iran is taking cautious steps to see if the ban may be lifted on imports of Western commercial aircraft.
According to local media outlet Kayhan, and reported by aerotime.aero, the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran has appealed on February 3, 2021, to Boeing inquiring about the status of the order shelved in 2018 as US sanctions took effect.
Following green light from the US Treasury in 2016, Iran Air signed contracts in April 2017 with Boeing for a total of 80 aircraft including 50 Boeing 737Max, 15 Boeing 777-300ER and 15 Boeing 777-9 aircraft, and another 60 aircraft to Aseman Airlines comprising 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with deliveries to start from 2022 and options for a further 30 aircraft.
But in June 2018, Boeing announced the deal with Iranian carriers to be annulled as sanctions were implemented, and no deliveries had taken place.
Iran had also signed deals for 100 Airbus aircraft and 20 aircraft from ATR.
Prior to the implementation of full US sanctions, Airbus managed to deliver one Airbus A321 and two Airbus A330 aircraft, while ATR managed to deliver 13 aircraft, while the remaining seven aircraft were reallocated to other customers.
