Feb 17, 2021 (newstodate): Airport projects were never plain sailing in Greenland - and economy is once again threatening the grandiose project for construction of three new airports.
Originally budgeted for three billion Danish Kroner, Greenland's airport company Kalaallit Airports will reconstruct the airports at Ilulissat and Nuuk with runways extended to 2,200m, and a new airport will be built at Qaqortoq with a 1,499m runway allowing for fixed-wing operations.
Now, revised budgets call for an almost 30 percent increase, or DKK 900 mio, through new loans or expansion of existing loans from the Danish state, the Danish National Bank, Greenland's government and the Nordic Investment Bank.
However, the budget deficit to be covered concerns only the projects at Nuuk and Ilulissat.
The project for a new airport at Qaqortoq has already been temporarily stalled since September 2020 as the outcome of a tender for the airport's runway made clear that the bids from the entrepreneurs by far exceeded the budget, requiring either a recalibration of the project, or reconsideration of its financing.
