Feb 04, 2021 (newstodate): Measured in cargo volumes handled, Latvia's Riga Airport retained its position as the largest operator in 2020 among the three Baltic markets.
A total of 18,157 tonnes of cargo and mail was thus handled at Riga Airport, but this was actually a decrease by 18.3 percent, y-o-y.
Lithuania's Vilnius Airport came close with a total of 14,476 tonnes, alone in the Baltic region to see growth after gaining 3.6 percent, y-o-y, in volumes handled.
Trailing behind was Estonia's Tallinn Airport where volumes handled dropped by 15.8 percent, y-o-y, to a mere 9,190 tonnes.
As everywhere else, the Covid-19 pandemic left a deep mark on developments in the Baltic states, but Riga Airport still benefited from being the home base of airBaltic; Vilnius Airport benefits from Turkish Cargo's two weekly Airbus A330-200F rotations, while Tallinn Airport has been hurt by the shortfall of passenger aircraft belly cargo capacity while also seeing streams of e-shipments moving to other venues.
